Henry Cook & the Dever Valley Riots
In May 2009 I was invited to talk on to the Dever Valley Local History Society at Micheldever and Barton Stacey. The subject of
the talk was Henry Cook and the Dever Valley Riots, and coincided with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at a special service at Micheldever's St Mary's Church on the
29th May 2009, honouring Henry Cook's life. Henry, who was baptised at Micheldever
on the 17th June 1810, was part of a mob that destroyed machinery and demanded
money from Thomas Dowden, at Northington Down Farm, among other places. Cook was found guilty of stiking Mr William Bingham Baring and knocking him to the ground, although some reports say that it
was only the brim of Mr Baring's hat and his shoulder that received the blow. Henry Cook was executed at Winchester, and buried at Micheldever on 15th January 1831.
Unite Union had approached Micheldever about erecting a plaque in the church to mark the 175th anniversary of Henry Cook's execution, but raising funds and getting permission from the Diocese of Winchester delayed the project until
2009.
The memorial on the wall beside that of Henry Cook is for the Reverend Thomas Clarke and his family. During the riots the Reverend Clarke was one of those who handed over money to the rioters. Henry Cook, along with John Kear, Isaac Hill, and William Winkworth, was found guilty of having assaulted the Reverend Thomas Clarke, put him in bodily fear, and taken from his person the sum of one sovereign, his property. The Reverend Clarke was vicar of Micheldever for 54 years.
